Terms of use

These terms apply when you use the ScrapWise website, apps and services ("ScrapWise"). By creating an account or using ScrapWise you agree to them. Please also read our privacy policy and anti-money-laundering approach.

1. Who we are

  • Combrook Limited trading as ScrapWise , a company registered in England and Wales, number 12789408
  • Registered office: Park Lane, Poynton, Cheshire SK12 1RQ
  • Registered with the Information Commissioner's Office, number 00015746897
  • Email: admin@scrapwise.uk · Phone: 0161 244 5566

2. What ScrapWise does

ScrapWise is a platform that lets scrap yards and other buyers ("yards") record purchases of scrap metal and waste from the people and businesses that sell to them ("sellers"), check sellers' identity, record traceable payments and report loads to Defra. It also lets the public find yards, prices and collectors.

ScrapWise is not a party to any sale. Each sale is between the seller and the yard. The yard decides whether to buy, the price, the weights and the payment, and is responsible for its own licences, records and legal reporting.

3. Your account

  • You must be at least 18 to register.
  • The information you give us must be true, complete and kept up to date. You must only upload genuine documents that belong to you or, for a business, to that business.
  • Keep your password and QR code safe. Tell us straight away if you think someone else has used your account. You can get a new QR code from your account at any time.
  • One person or business, one seller account.

4. Identity and business checks

We check the identity of every seller, and for businesses the business and the people behind it, when they register and every 12 months. Changing checked details starts a new check. Yards also check your ID in person before buying from you. We may refuse, suspend or close an account if we can't complete a check or have concerns. See our anti-money-laundering approach.

5. Selling scrap

When you sell through ScrapWise you confirm that:

  • you own what you're selling, or are authorised to sell it, and it is not stolen;
  • the vehicle and load details you give are correct;
  • hazardous items (for example batteries or items containing oils) are declared.

Payment is made by the yard, by bank transfer or other traceable method. Cash is never paid for scrap metal.

Some yards take a processing deduction, which covers their ScrapWise fee, from what they pay. If a yard does, the deduction is shown on your ticket and receipt and taken off the price you're paid. It doesn't change the weight recorded. The yard should tell you before you sell.

6. Yards and their staff

Yards are responsible for holding the licences and permits they need, for the accuracy of the tickets, weights, prices, payments and Defra reports they record, for checking sellers' ID in person, and for how their staff use ScrapWise. Yards must only use sellers' details for their own dealings with that seller and their legal obligations.

7. Plans, fees and payment

Free accounts

Members of the public, businesses producing scrap, and scrap or waste businesses that only sell through ScrapWise use ScrapWise free of charge.

Collector plans

Collectors and sole traders choose one of these plans. Every collector plan is a 12-month plan, whether you pay monthly or yearly (see your 12-month plan). ScrapWise isn't registered for VAT, so no VAT is charged: the price shown is the price you pay.

  • ScrapWise Solo — £4.99 per month or £49.90 per year. Collect, sell and track your scrap metal — all in one place, built for independent sole-trader collectors.
  • ScrapWise Solo Plus — £9.99 per month or £99.90 per year. Collect, sell and track your scrap metal — all in one place, built for independent sole-trader collectors. Included in the approved ScrapWise Collectors Directory.
  • ScrapWise Collector — £19.99 per month or £199.90 per year. Collect, sell and track your scrap metal — all in one place. Manage collection requests from new and existing customers in your area, and be included in the approved ScrapWise Collectors Directory.
  • Paying monthly: your first month is half price (once per customer — not again after changing plan). After that you pay the full monthly price.
  • Paying yearly: you pay for the year in advance and get 2 months free.
  • How payment is collected: by PayPal subscription, using your PayPal account or a debit or credit card through PayPal. You approve the subscription once on PayPal; after that PayPal takes each payment automatically.
  • When payment is collected: the first payment is taken when you set up payment. Monthly payments are then taken on the same date each month, and yearly payments on the same date each year.

Company plans (businesses that buy scrap)

Businesses that buy through ScrapWise pay as they go. Every company plan is a 12-month plan (see your 12-month plan). There are no limits on yards, users or sellers. These fees are not currently subject to VAT.

Pay as you go: turnover — a percentage of your turnover each calendar month: the total of your paid tickets.

Monthly turnoverFee
£1 – £25,0001%
£25,001 – £50,0000.9%
£50,001 – £100,0000.8%
£100,001 – £250,0000.7%
£250,001 – £500,0000.6%
Over £500,0000.5%

Pay as you go: per ticket — a fee for every ticket you close each calendar month.

Tickets each monthPer ticket
Tickets 1–100£1.00
Tickets 101–50075p
Ticket 501 onwards50p
  • How the bands work: each rate applies only to the part of the month's turnover or tickets that falls within its band, like tax bands. For example, £30,000 of turnover in a month costs £250 (1% of the first £25,000) plus £45 (0.9% of the next £5,000) = £295. The bands start again on the 1st of each month.
  • Standing charge: £100.00 each calendar month, charged on the first statement of the month. If a month's fees come to more than £200.00, that month's standing charge is credited back on the first statement of the following month.
  • Statements: we issue a statement every day for your first 2 months on a company plan, then every week. Each statement shows the fees for its period; if a ticket is cancelled after it has been charged, the fee is credited on the next statement. You can see your fees for the month so far, and every statement, in your ScrapWise account.
  • How payment is collected: when you set up payment you authorise us to charge the card or payment account you choose, through our payment provider, for each statement. You approve this once; after that each statement is collected automatically.
  • When payment is collected: each statement is issued the day after its period ends and collected on the day it is issued — daily for your first 2 months, then weekly.
  • Processing deduction: each yard can choose to pass ScrapWise's fees on to the sellers it buys from, as a processing deduction. When a ticket closes, the fee that ticket adds to your bill (the per-ticket fee, or the turnover percentage at the band your month has reached) is shown on the ticket and receipt and taken off the price paid to the seller. Weights, and what's reported to Defra, don't change. We still bill you for all fees as normal. The monthly standing charge is never passed on. You must tell sellers before you buy from them.

Your 12-month plan: payments, invoices and cancelling

Every paid plan, for collectors and for companies, is a 12-month agreement. It starts on the day you set up payment.

How you're invoiced and how payments are taken

  • Collector plans: PayPal takes each payment automatically, from your PayPal account or the card you chose there. Monthly plans pay on the same date each month; yearly plans pay on the same date each year. PayPal emails you a receipt for every payment, and each payment is listed in your PayPal account.
  • Company plans: your statement is your invoice. It lists the fees for its period (and any standing charge or credit). We issue one every day for your first 2 months, then every week. You can see every statement in your ScrapWise account. We take each statement's total from the card you saved with our payment provider, Cashflows, on the day the statement is issued.
  • Credits: any credit on your account is taken off your next payment before anything is charged.

If you cancel during your first 12 months

  • Tell us through Contact us or a message in your ScrapWise account.
  • Your plan doesn't stop straight away. It carries on until the end of your 12 months, and your payments carry on as normal on their usual dates until then. You can keep using everything in your plan until it ends.
  • Collector plans paid monthly: you pay each monthly payment left in your 12 months, then they stop. Paid yearly: you've already paid for the year, so nothing more is taken.
  • Company plans: you pay the £100.00 monthly standing charge for each month left in your 12 months. If you still record tickets on ScrapWise, their fees are charged as normal.
  • Example: you start a monthly collector plan on 10 January and cancel on 3 April. Payments carry on each month until 10 December, the last payment in your 12 months. Your plan ends on 9 January the next year, and nothing more is taken.
  • If you cancel the payment yourself (for example by cancelling the subscription in PayPal or removing your card) before your 12 months are up, the payments left in your 12 months are still owed. We'll ask you to set up payment again. If you don't, your account is treated as unpaid (see "Missed payments" below).

After your first 12 months

  • Your plan carries on, with payments taken in the same way, until you tell us you want to stop. There's no new 12-month term.
  • You can stop at any time. Your plan ends at the end of the period you've already paid for, and no more payments are taken:
    • Monthly collector plans: it ends when the month you've paid for runs out.
    • Yearly collector plans: it ends when the year you've paid for runs out. If your next yearly payment has already been taken when you tell us, the plan runs to the end of that year.
    • Company plans: it ends on the last day of the calendar month you tell us in. We then issue a final statement for any fees up to that day and take it from your saved card.

All paid plans

  • Consumers: if you're a consumer you can cancel within 14 days of signing up without giving a reason, and nothing further is due.
  • No refunds — credits instead: we don't refund payments for plans. If anything is due back to you — for example a fee for a ticket that was cancelled after it was charged, or a standing charge credited back — it's credited against your future fees and taken off your next payment. This doesn't affect your legal rights, including a consumer's right to cancel within 14 days, when anything you've paid will be refunded.
  • Missed payments: if a payment fails we'll let you know and our payment provider will try again. After two failed payments in a row your account is suspended until everything owed is paid: when you sign in you'll see what's owed and can pay it online straight away, but you won't be able to use ScrapWise — for example to record tickets — until you do. Nothing is deleted, and everything is available again as soon as you've paid. Yards can still buy from a collector whose account is suspended.
  • Price changes: we'll give you at least 60 days' notice before changing the price of your plan.
  • ScrapWise accounts (wallet): charges for paying and being paid through ScrapWise accounts haven't been set yet. We'll publish them before that service launches.

8. Things you must not do

  • Use ScrapWise for anything unlawful, including selling stolen metal, fraud or money laundering.
  • Give false information, impersonate anyone or use someone else's account or documents.
  • Try to access data you're not allowed to see, disrupt the service, or copy it with automated tools.
  • Use another user's details for anything other than the trade they relate to.

9. Suspending or closing accounts

You can close your account by contacting us. We may suspend or close an account if these terms are broken, if a check can't be completed, or if we must by law. Records we or yards are legally required to keep are kept for the required period even after an account closes (see our privacy policy).

10. Our responsibility to you

  • We work hard to keep ScrapWise available and accurate, but we can't promise it will always be uninterrupted or error-free. Information such as prices and directory listings is provided by yards and users.
  • We are not responsible for sales between sellers and yards, or for a yard's or seller's acts or omissions.
  • Nothing in these terms limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or anything else the law does not allow us to limit. If you're a consumer, your legal rights are not affected.
  • For business users, our total liability in any 12 months is limited to the fees you paid us in that period.

11. Changes

We may update these terms. We'll tell account holders about important changes before they take effect.

12. Law

These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction. If you live elsewhere in the UK you can also bring proceedings in your local courts.
