About ScrapWise

ScrapWise is a technology platform for buying, selling, managing and recycling materials — built by people who have been working alongside scrap yards since 2012.

What is ScrapWise?

Whether you're a member of the public with scrap to sell, a business with surplus material, a scrap yard buying metal, a recycler processing recovered materials, or a trader buying and selling further afield, ScrapWise is designed to make the process easier.

It brings people, businesses, materials, buyers, sellers and services together in one place — with the ID checks, paperwork and legal reporting done properly.

Built from real industry experience

ScrapWise isn't a technology company that simply decided to build a recycling app.

Our history goes back to 2012, when the law changed and scrap yards had to stop paying cash for scrap metal. We began developing technology to help them make that change — working directly with yards to develop, install and support systems that let them pay their customers without cash, including dedicated cashpoint and card payment systems used by businesses across the industry.

Among the businesses that worked with our technology were Oldbury Recycling, Dragon Metals and other established scrap yards.

That gave us something that can't be created in a boardroom: more than a decade of practical experience of how scrap yards, recyclers, traders and their customers actually operate. ScrapWise is the next stage of that work — our industry experience combined with modern marketplace technology, automation, data and artificial intelligence.

What you can do with ScrapWise today

If you sell scrap

  • One account for every ScrapWise yard. Register once, then show your QR code or account number at the counter.
  • Find yards and collectors near you by postcode, and compare today's prices from local yards.
  • Get paid properly — by bank transfer, with a receipt for every sale.
  • Keep your details private. Only the yards you trade with can see them.

If you run a scrap yard

  • Weighbridge tickets, receipts and self-billed VAT invoices.
  • Seller ID checks and the records the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013 requires.
  • Every load reported automatically to Defra's Digital Waste Tracking service, as required in England from October 2026.
  • Daily prices for each yard, end-of-day reports, and one view across all your yards.

Where ScrapWise is going

During 2026 and 2027 ScrapWise is growing from these foundations into a broader marketplace and technology platform for the recycling and recovered-materials industry:

  • More materials — vehicles, plastics, paper and cardboard, wood, textiles and other recyclable and recovered materials, alongside metals.
  • A marketplace where people and businesses list material to sell, buyers find what they need, and traders and brokers connect the two — with logistics, payments, finance and compliance services brought into the same place.
  • Artificial intelligence where it genuinely helps — understanding materials, spotting opportunities, matching buyers and sellers, helping with valuation and taking repetitive work off people's hands. Not AI for the sake of it.
  • Beyond the UK — our ambition is for ScrapWise to work across the UK, Ireland and international markets.

The aim is simple: make it easier to find value in materials that would otherwise be wasted.

Doing things the right way

Scrap is a regulated trade, and it's where we started. ScrapWise checks who its users are when they register and every 12 months after that, keeps every payment traceable, and helps yards meet their legal duties. Read about our anti-money-laundering approach.

From helping scrap yards move away from cash in 2012, to building an intelligent marketplace for the recycling industry in 2026 and beyond — ScrapWise: built from industry experience, developed for what comes next.
