Common questions

How do I get a better price for scrap?

Separate your metals by type, strip plastic or insulation from cable where it is safe to do so, remove non-metal attachments, and keep metals clean and dry. Sorted, clean metal is graded higher than mixed.

Can someone collect my scrap?

Yes. Scrap collectors listed on ScrapWise can be found by postcode. A collector must hold a scrap metal collector's licence from their local council and be a registered waste carrier with the Environment Agency (CBDU number). You can ask to see both.

What is Digital Waste Tracking?

From October 2026 waste receivers in England, including scrap yards, must report every load of waste they receive to Defra's Digital Waste Tracking service within 2 working days. ScrapWise yards report automatically. Sellers don't need to do anything extra.

What ID do I need to sell scrap?

You need photo ID (passport, photocard driving licence or national ID card) and proof of address. A photocard driving licence covers both. With a passport or ID card, also bring a utility bill or bank statement from the last 3 months. Scrap metal dealers must verify your name and address under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013, and each yard checks your ID in person on your first visit.

Why won't the yard pay me cash?

It has been illegal for scrap metal dealers in England and Wales to pay cash for scrap metal since December 2012 (the ban is now part of the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013). You are paid by bank transfer or cheque, so have your bank details ready.

Which metals are worth the most?

Generally copper is worth the most, especially clean bright copper wire, followed by brass, lead, stainless steel and aluminium. Steel and iron are worth less per kilo but add up in volume. Prices change daily; compare today's prices from local yards on ScrapWise.
